The Gathering 2013 is a Irish Government initiative in which they ask local communities to organise local events and festivals to celebrate their Irish Heritage, and genealogy. It will run throughout the year and the
message is plain and simple, calling all people connected to Ireland to come back
home. Many special events have been organised but the Clan Gathering in
Sneem tried for something a little more.
The Guinness Book or World Record.
6 years ago in 2007 the Gallagher’s hosted the biggest clan gathering on
record with 1488 people with the surname Gallagher descending on Donegal. In 2013 another clan, the O’Sullivans are trying to break their achievement with their
record own by bringing together as many O’Sullivans as possible into the
village of Sneem in County Kerry, located in the South West of Ireland.
Registration took this on Sunday the 16th of June from 5pm to 7pm
with the offical Guinness Book of World Records count taking place during this time. Everyone had to bring
their Identification to prove their O’Sullivan Heritage such as a birth cert, passport or driver’s license or. Then all the O’Sullivan's who register must remain to be
counted, as registration on its own is not enough for an official record.
Buses were organised to bring as many O'Sullivans from the Iveragh Peninsula to the gathering and
this was led by Daniel Tim O’Sullivan. In recent months he has been asking any O’Sullivans from the US and UK to join in on their record attempt.
Events ran all during the week and there was plenty of
entertainment for all such as a special Gaelic Football Match between
the O’Sullivans Beara of Cork versus the O’Sullivan Mor of Mid Kerry,
also a craft fair, live street entertainment, a rowing display and a
family fun day.
