Today's blog is a collection of pictures I found of famous people wearing Aran Sweaters or as they are sometimes called irish sweaters, fisherman sweater or boyfriend sweater. Although knitted and worn for centuries in the west of Ireland it was only in the 1950 and 1960's that the Irish sweater became popular due to various fashion spreads in yachting magazines as well as some famous faces seen wearing them.

In the picture below taking from a fashion magazine you see a model wearing an Irish Aran Sweater as well as smoking a cigarette, back when it was marketed as "cool" to smoke.
Next we have a picture taken from behind the scenes of the movie Ryan's Daughter. We can see that a writer for the movie is wearing an Irish Aran Sweater.
In continuing with some more screen icons we have Steve McQueen wearing his favorite Irish Sweater.
This style worn my Steve McQueen would be the most popular aran stitch design pattern. This cable knit Irish Sweater is knit using traditional knitting patterns from Ireland. The diamond knitting pattern said to represent wealth and success, alongside the traditional cable pattern symbolising fisherman’s ropes unite the past with the modern day. In Steve McQueen's case I guess the wealth and success prediction came through!
