How to wash a Sheepskin Rug

A common picture in any irish home, whether it be in the front of a warm fireplace, hanging on the back of a sofa, on the bottom of a bed or just as a floor rug, these rugs create a sense of warmth and Irishness to any home. Many people love sheepskin rug yet after purchase they don't think about what is involved in caring for sheepskin rug and increasing it's longevity. 

Right you've come to the day that the once beautiful skeepskin rug you bought needs some tender loving care. 

The first thing you should remember is to only use cold (room temperatiure) water during the washing process. You can have them dry cleaned also. Please note some sheepskin rugs are very delicate and even if you decided to put them in the washer on the gentlest of cycle you could ruin the skeepskin. My advice is never ever chance the washer!!

Fill a tub large enough for your sheepskin rug with cold water and add some baby Shampoo such as Johnson's or similar. Don't use too much just a cap full will suffice. After this you need to place the skeepskin rug in the water fleece size down. Wash gently with your hand as if caring for a loved one! 

Remove the sheepskin when you are done and gently comb in the same direction. Don't let to dry in the sun, instead lay it flat fleece side down or you can hang it up. When it is fully dry use the comb again to fluff it back to normal. And there you go good as new. 

Some tips - for a comb use a steel type pet brush, never consider using bleach, woolite nor laundry soap. As about use something gentler like a baby shampoo.  Again never ever, EVER!, use hot water or even put inside the dryer, this will ruin your rug. When I say use cold water I don't mean add some ice. Rather use water that is cooled to room temperature. Wool shrinks if the water you use is too cold. The important point here is not to shock the wool. Fill the tub to a temperature where you don't notice any difference in when you place you fingers in.
